Ingredient spotlight: Hungarian Mud

Hungarian Mud
Also known as Moor Mud, I have been intrigued by this superstar ingredient since I first heard of it. Found in bogs around Europe, this organic substance is essentially decomposed plant material from thousands of years ago. Sound stinky? Not so. This purifying mud contains a high level of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and trace elements. The bogs even have their own natural filtration process- the top layer acts as a barrier, keeping oxygen and modern day toxins out of the pristine mud underneath. The result is a deeply nourishing, healing, and detoxifying mud that can be used both internally and externally.

The use of therapeutic mud dates back to Egyptian times and more recently in the 1940's. Used for hormone balance, pain relief, detoxification and general well-being, Moor Mud rapidly became popular in Austrian spa treatments. After clinical studies by the German and Austrian governments, Moor mud became mainstream and is still used today by European physicians.

But what fascinates me most is Moor Mud's remarkable effect on SKIN!!! A simple google search for "bog people" will bring up some truly creepy pictures of bodies that were mummified in this European mud. Due to insanely perfect conditions, the skin on these bodies (which date back to 8000 BCE) is in near immaculate condition! I always think of this story of "The Girl of Uchter Moor." Her body was discovered in 2000 and initially thought to be that of a girl that disappeared in 1969. Upon DNA testing they discovered that the body was from 764 to 515 BC. Maybe it's just me, but I would think that under moderate observation, forensic experts might know the difference between a 31 year old corpse and a 2,600 year old one.

This only leads me to believe that Moor Mud has amazing anti-aging properties, and should be applied to our skin. Frequently. I know there are a lot of new scientific anti-aging products out there, and I do believe that many of them work. But how long have they been around? Certainly not for thousands of years. The proof is in the pudding, in this case. The very dark muddy pudding.

So I urge you to come try for yourself. Eminence has a wonderful Hungarian Herbal Mud Treatment that can be incorporated into your facial at Spa Moab. This treatment will stimulate circulation, aid in detoxification (great for acne), heal and soothe irritations, and promote young, healthy, glowing skin! Hope to see you soon.

Maintaining a Healthy Lymphatic System

Lymph is a clear fluid that surrounds every cell in the body. It carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells while simultaneously removing waste and toxins. Unlike our blood flow, which is constantly being pumped through the body, lymph depends on muscle movement (primarily breathing) in order to move. So,a sluggish body equals sluggish lymph and results in numerous health problems. Stagnant lymph can cause fatigue, allergies, muscle cramping, headaches, bloating, acne and cellulite. Not fun stuff! So how do we keep our lymph moving?

- Keep your body moving! Exercise is the best way (in my opinion) to maintain a healthy lymphatic system.

- Drink plenty of water. Without adequate water, the lymph cannot flow properly.

- Eat clean. Keep refined, processed, and artificial food OUT of your diet! Green vegetables are important for lymph cleansing. Essential fatty acids (found in fish, raw nuts and seeds, avocados) are great for the lymph system as well.

- Practice deep breathing. This will reap numerous health benefits. Kudos if you practice yoga and/or meditation.

- Dry skin brushing. This is another post entirely, but basically consists of a gentle, full body exfoliation that assists lymph flow.

- Enjoy a relaxing massage or facial. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very light massage technique designed to move the lymph fluid that lies just underneath the skin. It can be incorporated into full body massage and facials- just let your therapist know that this is something you're interested in. MLD, again, consists of a very light touch. While most find it very relaxing, it is quite different from regular massage. Enjoy what feels best to you.

Some of the benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage include:
- cell regeneration

- improved hydration

- increased immunity

-faster healing

Facial MLD Benefits:
- Anti-aging

- Reduces puffiness/ dark under eye circles

- tightens and lifts

- reduces inflammation and redness

-improves acne

A healthy lymphatic system really will increase your vitality and longevity. With so many enjoyable ways to get it flowing, you should have no excuses! Here's to your happy, healthy body.
