Maintaining a Healthy Lymphatic System

Lymph is a clear fluid that surrounds every cell in the body. It carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells while simultaneously removing waste and toxins. Unlike our blood flow, which is constantly being pumped through the body, lymph depends on muscle movement (primarily breathing) in order to move. So,a sluggish body equals sluggish lymph and results in numerous health problems. Stagnant lymph can cause fatigue, allergies, muscle cramping, headaches, bloating, acne and cellulite. Not fun stuff! So how do we keep our lymph moving?

- Keep your body moving! Exercise is the best way (in my opinion) to maintain a healthy lymphatic system.

- Drink plenty of water. Without adequate water, the lymph cannot flow properly.

- Eat clean. Keep refined, processed, and artificial food OUT of your diet! Green vegetables are important for lymph cleansing. Essential fatty acids (found in fish, raw nuts and seeds, avocados) are great for the lymph system as well.

- Practice deep breathing. This will reap numerous health benefits. Kudos if you practice yoga and/or meditation.

- Dry skin brushing. This is another post entirely, but basically consists of a gentle, full body exfoliation that assists lymph flow.

- Enjoy a relaxing massage or facial. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very light massage technique designed to move the lymph fluid that lies just underneath the skin. It can be incorporated into full body massage and facials- just let your therapist know that this is something you're interested in. MLD, again, consists of a very light touch. While most find it very relaxing, it is quite different from regular massage. Enjoy what feels best to you.

Some of the benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage include:
- cell regeneration

- improved hydration

- increased immunity

-faster healing

Facial MLD Benefits:
- Anti-aging

- Reduces puffiness/ dark under eye circles

- tightens and lifts

- reduces inflammation and redness

-improves acne

A healthy lymphatic system really will increase your vitality and longevity. With so many enjoyable ways to get it flowing, you should have no excuses! Here's to your happy, healthy body.

Beat the Winter Blahs with Aromatherapy

Beat the Winter Blahs with Aromatherapy

We've all felt it at some point- lack of motivation, boredom, and feeling cooped up inside. The winter can be a difficult time of year. I certainly haven't gotten outside as much as I'd like and it's making me feel a bit crazy. While exercise and a healthy diet are crucial to mental well-being, there are other measures we can take to help lift our spirits. I've been using essential oils a lot lately (ok, maybe obsessively) and their benefits are nothing short of amazing.

Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years and works via the limbic system, a part of the brain considered to be the seat of emotion. Whenever you smell something that evokes a flashback or memory, olfactory passageways are connecting a scent to an emotion. And so it makes sense that we can use therapeutic and uplifting scents to positively alter our mood!

Some of the key essential oils for depression are:

Grapefruitstimulate neurotransmitters in the brain that induce feelings of euphoria
Tangerinecontains sedative properties
Roserelieves stress
Geraniumuplifting and balancing
Bergamotmood enhancing
Basilenergizing
Ylang-ylang- calming, combats stress and anxiety. Aphrodisiac.
Clary Sage- calms the nervous system

The most common ways to use essential oils are through inhalation and topical application. Diffusers are easy to use and widely available. You can also just simmer some water on the stove and add several drops of essential oil. Adding them to a bath is simple too. Essential oils evaporate easily, so basically any method that lifts them into the air (think steam/ mist/ vapor) is going to work. Topically, they can be incorporated into scrubs, body oils, facial toners, and so on. This is great for your skin too, as many of them stimulate circulation, aid detoxification, and have wonderful healing properties. Essential oils are very potent and concentrated, however, so do be careful. Less is more. Some essential oils are contraindicated for pregnancy.

As always, I recommend a healthy lifestyle first and foremost. Get outside, exercise, hydrate, eat well, and get adequate sleep. Our thoughts are equally important. Practice gratitude daily and open yourself to all things positive. Add in the healing power of aromatherapy and you are ready to enjoy the very best of the season! Happy winter!
